Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) Develops Food Standards for Australia and New Zealand

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is a statutory authority in the Australian Government Health portfolio. FSANZ develops food standards for Australia and New Zealand. The standards are contained in the Food Standards Code, which is enforced by state and territory departments, agencies and local councils in Australia; the Ministry for Primary Industries in New Zealand and the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources for food imported into Australia. Food safety is covered by several standards in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. These standards aim to lower the incidence of foodborne illness by strengthening food safety and traceability throughout the food supply chain, from paddock to plate. A food business is any business or activity that involves the handling of any type of food for sale, or the sale of food in Australia. Charities, community groups and businesses operating from a private home or at temporary events are exempt from some of the requirements in the food safety standards. These groups and businesses can contact their local enforcement authority for further information. We sometimes receive enquiries that should be directed to other agencies, for example food complaints, label approvals, licences and permits and information about importing food into Australia. © Food Standards Australia New Zealand

More About Food Standards Australia New Zealand

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is an independent statutory agency established by the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991 (FSANZ Act). FSANZ develops standards to regulate the use of ingredients, processing aids, colourings, additives, vitamins and minerals. The Food Standards Code also covers the composition of some foods, e.g. dairy, meat and beverages as well as foods developed by new technologies such as genetically modified foods. We are also responsible for some labelling requirements for packaged and unpackaged food, e.g. specific mandatory warnings or advisory labels. FSANZ also develops Australia-only primary production and processing standards.
