Winemaker in the Heart of Australia's Iconic Barossa Valley
Rockford Wines is a wine producer located in the heart of Australia's iconic Barossa Valley.
Founded in the early 1980s by Robert O'Callaghan, Rockford Wines has grown to become a tour de force amongst Australia's leading wineries creating a range of quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines.
Starting his career as a trainee winemaker at Seppelts in Rutherglen, Victoria in 1965, Robert headed west to the Barossa in 1975 acquiring two hectares (5 acres) of land beneath the Barossa Ranges, planting vines and building a winery there.
Rockford's inaugural vintage followed in 1984.
The winemaking process at Rockfords is mostly traditional using open-topped concrete fermenters, bag presses and an original 1880s Bagshaw crusher found on site at the property.
In addition to his small home vineyard, Robert works alongside independent wine growers around the Barossa region. This allows for a variety of soil types, mesoclimates and altitudes for the grapes which in turn allows for a greater degree of control within the winery itself. Many vines were planted on their own rootstocks and are between 60 to 100 years old yielding an intensely concentrated grape easily translating into the wines.
Rockford's principal wine is a Basket Press Shiraz, carefully aged in French and American oak hogshead barrels for two years before release. Other quality wines in the portfolio include the Sparkling Black Shiraz, the Rifle Range Cabernet Sauvignon and the Rod and Spur Cabernet Shiraz blend.
